| This is a list of special architectural attractions open to the public - places you might want to go to purely for their archiectural content. They are individual buildings of significant interest which you can enter and enjoy. We are not, however, attempting a comprehensive tourist guide and galleries and the like (with serious architectural content) will be added as a second level of information. The UK is listed first. | Adolf Loos | Villa Muller , 1929-1930 | |
| Nad hradním vodojemem 14, Praha |
In the house Loos preserved a 'desire for habitability' in terms not of
function but of the shape of the interior space. The external symmetry contains
a complex internal scheme of the private, single-family house. There is
not only a separation between levels which corresponds to day and night
but also a complex spatial sequence which guides movement from the outside
to the inside, complemented by a scenic sequence which interpenetrates separate
spaces. A narrow entrance leads to a short spiral staircase which suddenly
reveals a view of the living room, with a view of the dining room seen eight
steps higher. If the essence of Loos' genuine expression of 'spatial thinking'
amounts to 'a chess game in space', then the play of levels in the Muller
House allows us to imagine a game in which we play with the rules themselves,
so that the rules of chess become the pawns of the game." (The Architecture of Adolf Loos, pp. 72-74) |
